In a country with over 1,000 islands, Ilovik is perfect for those looking to experience Croatia's untouched natural beauty, away from the more touristy spots, while still enjoying its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. Covering just 6.2 km² and with a population typically under 100 residents, this island is known for its calm, laid-back vibe, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds.
The southernmost inhabited island in the Lošinj archipelago is small but full of surprises. Due to its abundance of Mediterranean plants, including oleanders, bougainvillea, and wild herbs, as well as olive groves, vineyards, and fig trees that dot the landscape and contribute to the local agricultural lifestyle, the island is often called the 'Island of Flowers'. This small island also has a rich history dating back to Roman times, and remnants of this past can be found in the form of ancient ruins and stone buildings. The island’s church, dedicated to St. Peter, is a significant historical site. Surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters, the island boasts secluded coves and small pebble beaches. It’s a great spot for swimming, snorkeling, and boating. The bay between Ilovik and its neighboring uninhabited island of Sv. Petar provides sheltered anchorage for yachts. Ilovik is also famous for its strong fishing and agricultural traditions, with local restaurants offering fresh seafood and local delicacies. It's an excellent place to enjoy authentic Croatian cuisine, especially with a focus on sustainability and locally sourced ingredients. It's the perfect island escape.
